Epoxy Thickness Calculator

Work backwards from the epoxy you have: find how thick it will pour over your surface, or how much area it covers at the thickness you want.

1. Epoxy you have (mixed)

Some epoxy always stays in the cup and runs off the edges.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter how much mixed epoxy you have (resin plus hardener).
  2. Choose whether you want the thickness over your surface or the area you can cover.
  3. If the coat is thinner than 1/8 inch, it may not self-level; if it is thicker than your label allows, pour in layers.

How the calculation works

  • 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches; 1 fl oz = 1.805 cubic inches; 1 liter = 61.02 cubic inches
  • Thickness = volume ÷ (length × width)
  • Area = volume ÷ thickness

Not enough epoxy? Your options

  • Make the area smaller: do one section now and the rest in a second pour, after the first has cured.
  • Pour two thinner coats: a thin seal coat first, then a flood coat once you have more epoxy. Stay at about 1/8 inch per flood coat so it levels.
  • Buy the difference: use the Epoxy Resin Calculator to find the full amount, subtract what you have and buy the same brand so the coats match.
  • Do not stretch it: spreading epoxy thinner than it wants to level leaves dry spots and ridges that are hard to fix.

Frequently asked questions

How thick will my epoxy be?

Divide the volume by the area. One gallon (231 cubic inches) spread over a 24 × 48 inch table top gives a coat about 0.2 inch thick, a little under 1/4 inch.

How much area does a gallon of epoxy cover at 1/8 inch?

About 12.8 square feet. At 1/16 inch the same gallon covers twice as much, about 25.7 square feet.

What thickness is a flood coat of epoxy?

Most table top epoxies self-level at about 1/8 inch (3 mm) per coat. Thinner pours may not level, and thicker pours need a deep pour product.

What is a mil in epoxy thickness?

A mil is one thousandth of an inch (0.001 in), used for floor and wall coatings. 1/8 inch is 125 mils, and 10 mils is about 0.25 mm.
